Boat operators in Port Whitby, Ontario, are being warned of dangerous conditions as weather shifts from rain to snow on January 14, 2026. Environment Canada’s Western Lake Ontario marine forecast says scattered showers will change to rain or snow near noon and to snow this evening, with visibility falling to about 1 mile or less in snow.
Waves are expected to be around 1.5 metres, subsiding to about 1 metre near noon, according to Environment Canada. The rapidly falling visibility — which Environment Canada classifies as “very poor” (about 1 mile or less) — raises the risk of vessels colliding with objects or running aground, particularly in confined areas such as Port Whitby Marina.
The Canadian Coast Guard has warned that waterways remain very cold in January, increasing the risk of hypothermia if an incident occurs. Transport Canada’s Safe Boating guidance also advises boaters to delay departures if visibility is expected to fall and to check the latest forecast for their area before heading out.
Local authorities and marina operators are urging boatowners to secure exposed equipment and check their moorings. People currently on the water should take precautions: use navigation and radar where available (Environment Canada notes radar becomes the primary tool in very poor visibility) and avoid transiting harbour channels if you cannot see clearly.
