Indian Falls Park in Newburne, Nova Scotia, is slated to reopen in Spring 2026 with new features designed to improve accessibility for residents. The park was closed during the 2024 and 2025 seasons while the Municipality of the District of Lunenburg carried out several major upgrades to the site.
Workers are finishing accessible, smooth-surface pathways and an accessible picnic area to make navigation easier for people using mobility aids or strollers. The project also includes the installation of accessible vault washrooms and the replacement of the old wooden stairway to the riverfront with a steel stairway designed for greater longevity and safety.
These changes are part of a larger effort to meet provincial accessibility goals under the Nova Scotia Accessibility Act and the government’s “Access by Design 2030” initiative, which aim for a barrier-free province by 2030. MODL has said the steel stair replacement was necessary to address safety concerns because the existing wooden stairway had reached the end of its useful life and was prone to deterioration.
The park — a popular local spot for swimming, fishing and photography — is located at 1585 Newburne Road, about 30 minutes northwest of Bridgewater. While the site remains closed during the final stages of construction, the Municipality of the District of Lunenburg has said it expects the park to reopen in Spring 2026.
