Residents on the Avalon Peninsula, including Conception Bay, are invited to upcoming winter cultural events hosted by Qalipu First Nation to help families connect with Mi’kmaw heritage. The activities include a community craft workshop and a multi-day festival designed to bring traditional knowledge to members living away from the band’s western administrative base.
A community Valentine-making arts session is scheduled for Saturday, February 7, 2026, from 12:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. The session will take place at the Qalipu Community Room (1 Church Street) in Corner Brook and focuses on building social connections during the winter season.
Later in the month, Qalipu will host Kesikewey Wutan (“The Winter Village”) on February 27 (evening) and February 28 (daytime), 2026, at the Majestic Lawn in Corner Brook. The event will feature Mi’kmaw music and drumming, sensory tents displaying traditional animal furs and traditional medicines, demonstrations of land-based skills, and other activities intended to revitalize and share cultural knowledge. Past Kesikewey Wutan programming has included drumming led by Paul Pike, QFN Cultural Outreach Officer.
These gatherings are part of Qalipu’s outreach to members who live outside the band’s traditional home base in Western Newfoundland. Those interested in attending can find more details and register through the Qalipu events calendar on the band’s official website.
