The Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit (SMDHU) has released its 2026–2029 Strategic Plan, a four‑year roadmap that will guide how local health services — including vaccination programs and infectious disease prevention — are planned and delivered across Simcoe, Ontario. The plan, which runs from 2026 to 2029, emphasizes making health care fairer through an equity lens and integrating digital health innovations to improve access to services. It also signals a shift from emergency pandemic response toward long‑term community health and wellness as the unit returns to a post‑pandemic operational model.

This is the first major strategic plan developed under the leadership of Dr. Lisa Simon, the region’s new Medical Officer of Health and Chief Executive Officer, who formally began the role on October 1, 2025. OrilliaMatters reports the plan emphasizes the ‘Skilled and Connected Workforce’, ‘Community Engagement’ and ‘Equity‑driven Action’ pillars — highlighting supports for staff and measures to ensure programs reach all parts of the community.

Public engagement is active as of February 4, 2026, with community input sessions and surveys scheduled to run through February 2026. Those sessions are intended to inform how the health unit implements everyday services and how it communicates about local health issues, with officials saying they want input from across the region to ensure services — from emergency response planning to wellness programs — meet the needs of local families.

The plan also commits to addressing long‑term issues such as the opioid crisis and climate‑related health risks. Regional reporting in Muskoka411 and SMDHU materials note the unit will strengthen relationships with local municipalities to provide data‑driven advice on housing, social services and other policy areas — work intended to support decision‑making for roughly 600,000 residents across Simcoe County and the District Municipality of Muskoka.
