The provincial government announced on February 5, 2026, that 12 newly graduated sheriffs will be posted to courthouses across the province, including the Williams Lake Law Courts in Williams Lake, British Columbia. These officers will provide security for judges, court staff and members of the public so that court proceedings can run safely and efficiently.

Twelve recruits graduated from the Justice Institute of British Columbia on February 4, 2026. The recruits completed their JIBC training (which includes an initial 11-week academic block) and began field training alongside experienced sheriffs on Feb. 5, 2026; they are expected to be ready for full deployment beginning March 6, 2026. Once deployed, they will support prisoner transport, jury administration and courtroom safety at regional courthouse hubs.

The extra staffing is intended to help address a multi-year staffing shortfall in the BC Sheriff Service that has contributed to trial delays and, at times, courtroom closures. Local coverage has reported that past shortages forced some hearings to be rescheduled, making it harder for residents to have their cases heard (Williams Lake Tribune, Feb. 5, 2026).

The Williams Lake courthouse has also faced security incidents in recent years, including a hoax bomb threat on Nov. 24, 2025, and vandalism that damaged the building’s entrance in October 2024. The new sheriffs are part of broader provincial recruitment and retention efforts aimed at stabilizing court operations in rural communities throughout the Cariboo and beyond.
