The Steinbach and Area Garden Club is hosting a special presentation on February 9, 2026, to teach Steinbach, Manitoba, residents how to design yards that better handle heavy rain and support local wildlife. The session aims to provide practical solutions for homeowners to manage water on their own property while improving the local environment.
Working with the Seine Rat Roseau Watershed District, the club will show how to build rain gardens that catch water from roofs and sump pumps. These gardens are planted in a shallow bowl-shaped depression and use native plants that tolerate both brief standing water and dry periods to absorb and infiltrate runoff, helping reduce the burden on community storm drains.
The event takes place in the Auditorium at the Mennonite Heritage Village and focuses on making gardens that are both beautiful and functional. Along with managing water, these spaces are designed to create habitat for pollinators such as Monarch butterflies.
SRRWD staff and local experts will provide advice on soil preparation and plant selection for the region’s heavy clay soils. The watershed district also offers technical support and incentive programs for residents who want to start these projects in their own yards during the upcoming spring season, including homeowner grants (up to $750) and design support.
