On February 6, 2026, Minister Lucy Kuptana released a Capital Delivery Status Update highlighting rapid housing progress across the Northwest Territories, with specific impacts for Inuvik residents. The update confirms that the government is moving away from planning and toward accelerated delivery to address the local housing shortage.

As part of a territorial initiative to build 219 new housing units, Inuvik is set to receive 20 new modular homes designed for durability and energy efficiency in the northern climate. These units are intended to stabilize the local social housing program and reduce waiting lists for families.

The government is also prioritizing the maintenance of existing infrastructure, committing more than $30 million over the next three years to repair and retrofit over 600 homes territory-wide. This funding aims to resolve maintenance backlogs and improve living conditions for current tenants in Inuvik and surrounding communities.

Minister Kuptana noted that this housing push also provides local economic benefits, as over 95% of Housing NWT contracts are awarded to northern businesses. By utilizing modular construction and localized trades training, the government aims to complete these projects faster and provide long-term housing security for Inuvik families.
