The Humane Society Yukon (HSY) has paused its regional satellite operations near Watson Lake and closed that facility to the public for the week of February 9–15, 2026. HSY said the pause allows staff to consult with veterinarians about facility operations and animal health/intake protocols.
During the closure, adoptions, public visits and walk-in services are suspended. People who need to surrender a pet or require emergency help with an animal are asked to contact the society by phone or email for guidance on next steps.
Residents needing immediate help may be directed to other options such as the Yukon Animal Rescue Network (YARN), a Watson Lake–based grassroots rescue. In some cases, owners may be asked to travel to Whitehorse or find temporary local accommodations for animals until Watson Lake services resume.
HSY said it is working to be more efficient and evidence-informed in its operations. The Yukon government has previously provided financial support to the society, including $74,925 from the Community Development Fund in July 2024 for upgrades to the Mae Bachur Animal Shelter and a one-time $135,000 payment in 2023 to address an operational shortfall.
