Residents in Burlington, Ontario, are seeing a small increase in their monthly electricity bills that took effect January 1, 2026. The Ontario Energy Board approved the change, which added approximately $3.93 per month to the bill of a typical household using 750 kilowatt-hours of power.
The extra money will help Burlington Hydro spend $21.6 million over the next five years on local equipment and power lines to ensure the grid remains reliable. Before approving the increase, the provincial regulator reduced the utility company’s original spending request by more than $7 million to keep costs lower for residents.
The delivery portion of the bill is the only part kept by Burlington Hydro, making up about 26 per cent of a resident’s total monthly cost. The remaining amount on the bill goes toward the cost of producing electricity and transporting it across high-voltage lines throughout the province.
Help is available for customers who find it difficult to keep up with electricity costs. Low-income households can apply for monthly bill credits through the Ontario Electricity Support Program or look into emergency grants offered by the Low-income Energy Assistance Program.
