The 79th annual Northern Manitoba Trappers’ Festival has officially started in The Pas, Manitoba, bringing a week of winter competitions and community events to the area from February 18 to February 22, 2026. This long-standing celebration is one of the oldest winter festivals in Canada and focuses on the heritage and skills of northern pioneers.

The festival includes signature events such as the World Championship Dog Race and the King and Queen Trapper competitions. Visitors can watch participants test their skills in traditional activities like wood sawing, trap setting, moose calling, and bannock baking. There is also a flour packing contest and the ongoing Fur Queen competition.

The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 19 is playing a major role this year by hosting Trapper Days at their building at 4 Veterans Way. The legion is offering indoor social gatherings and clubroom activities that provide a warm place for families and seniors to gather during the week.

Community outreach is also a part of the festival as Fur Queen candidates visit local schools and seniors’ residences. These visits allow the festival ambassadors to meet with residents while representing the traditions of the community. The event is expected to bring extra traffic to local businesses and the downtown area before wrapping up on Sunday.
