Tenant groups in Canmore, Alberta, have until April 12, 2026, to apply for money from a new national fund that helps renters work together to improve their living conditions. This money comes from the National Tenant Organizing Fund, which was recently added to the local funding list by Bow Valley Non-Profits.
The grants are meant for tenant unions or small groups of at least three neighbours who want to talk about rental issues. To qualify, these groups must be independent and not run by landlords or the government.
According to Housing Justice Now, the group behind the fund, the money can be used to pay for meeting spaces, local campaigns, or short-term help to keep the group running. The fund does not pay for long-term salaries or traditional social services.
This new support arrives as Canmore deals with high land costs and a shortage of rental homes. The town has previously tried to help by offering tax breaks to developers and creating a tax for homeowners with empty houses.
Interested groups can find out more by contacting the local resource hub at Bow Valley Non-Profits. A decision on which groups will receive the money is expected to be made in late April 2026.
