Lethbridge, Alberta, is preparing for a significant warm spell this week that will cause snow to melt quickly across the city. According to Environment Canada, temperatures are expected to climb well above the usual 4°C average, reaching 16°C on March 7, 2026, and peaking at 18°C on March 8, 2026.
The sudden rise in temperature is expected to turn snow-covered streets into slush and could put a heavy load on local storm drains. Residents should watch for standing water on roads and check the drainage around their homes to make sure water can flow away from their properties.
Lethbridge often sees these quick temperature changes because of Chinooks, which are warm winds that blow in from the mountains. These winds can melt a lot of snow in a short time, which usually puts the city’s drainage systems to the test at the end of the winter season.
The warm weather will be short-lived, with a cooling trend starting on March 9, 2026. The forecast predicts a daytime high of 3°C and a 60 per cent chance of showers, which could lead to icy patches on roads and sidewalks as surface water refreezes overnight.
