Members of the Peguis First Nation who live away from the community are discussing the creation of a private database to help them stay informed and participate in nation-wide decisions. This grassroots initiative aims to support the more than 11,000 registered members of Manitoba’s largest First Nation, many of whom face communication barriers when trying to vote or access resources from a distance.
The project is being organized by the Peguis First Nation Off Reserve Connection, an unofficial online hub for members living in other areas. The group aims to create a reliable way to share news and ensure that the diaspora has the information needed to take part in nation activities and governance.
According to the Peguis First Nation Membership Department, all registered members have the right to vote on matters affecting the community, regardless of where they live. Off-reserve members, who make up a significant portion of the population, are looking for more effective ways to exercise that right and maintain a connection to their culture.
By building an independent contact list, the group hopes to improve voting access during elections and referendums, making it easier to reach members who are spread out across the region. The effort focuses on ensuring those living off-reserve have a consistent voice in the decisions that shape the future of the Peguis First Nation.
