The Peguis First Nation Chief and Council released an official notice on March 6, 2026, to inform the community in Manitoba that a long-standing land and treaty claim has not yet been settled. Leadership issued the update to correct false information being shared online which suggested that the community had already reached an agreement with the federal government.
The “Cows and Ploughs” claim relates to agricultural benefits, such as livestock, seeds, and equipment, that were promised to First Nations in historical treaties. These items were often not provided or were under-delivered by the Crown in the past. While some other communities have reached agreements recently, Peguis leadership confirmed that their specific negotiations are still ongoing.
According to the official announcement, the First Nation has not received any settlement money for this claim at this time. The Government of Canada is the office responsible for settling these historical treaty promises.
Community members are being asked to ignore rumours and rely only on official updates from the band office. Leadership noted that they want to manage expectations and ensure everyone has the facts about the status of these legal discussions.
