On March 10, 2026, the Windsor-Essex County Health Unit announced that 98.7 per cent of elementary students across Windsor and Essex County, including those in Amherstburg, have updated their mandatory vaccination records. This high rate of participation means that the vast majority of students met provincial health requirements in time to avoid suspension.
The update follows a thorough review of 46,163 student files across the region that began in the fall of 2025. By working with parents to update these records, the health unit was able to significantly reduce the number of children facing suspension, which was the penalty for students with incomplete records as of the March 10 deadline.
Dr. Mehdi Aloosh, the Medical Officer of Health for the Windsor-Essex County Health Unit, oversaw the effort to ensure local students followed the provincial rules. For families in Amherstburg and throughout the county, this success reflects the effective coordination between schools and local clinics in managing the mandatory documentation process.
This high level of participation also reduces the pressure on local healthcare providers for last-minute appointments for the remainder of the school year. Most children in the community are now fully documented according to the requirements of the Immunization of School Pupils Act.
While elementary students have met this milestone, the health unit is now focusing on secondary school students. High school students must have their immunization records updated by March 31, 2026, or they will face suspension until the required paperwork is filed.
