On March 13, 2026, two people were found dead following a house fire on Highway 17B in Echo Bay, Ontario. Emergency crews responded to the fire at approximately 3:51 p.m. to find the building engulfed in flames. Responders discovered the two individuals inside the residence shortly after they arrived on the scene.
The Ontario Provincial Police responded to the emergency along with the Echo Bay and Townships Volunteer Fire Department and Sault Ste. Marie Paramedic Services.
A joint investigation is now underway to determine what caused the fire. This team includes the Office of the Fire Marshal and the Office of the Chief Coroner. They are working with the Ontario Forensic Pathology Service, Forensic Identification Services, and the Sault Ste. Marie OPP Crime Unit to gather information.
As of March 16, 2026, police have not released the names of the two people found in the home. No details have been shared about how the fire started while the investigation continues.
