The Town of Aurora, Ontario, is looking for Indigenous designers to create a new memorial honouring Indigenous service members who served from World War I to today. This initiative aims to recognise the historical contributions of Indigenous veterans and preserve their history through art.
Proposals for the project are due by April 10, 2026, with the monument expected to be built later this year. The town intends to place the memorial in Aurora Peace Park to fill a missing element in the local landscape of historical monuments.
Mayor Tom Mrakas confirmed the plans during his 2025 year-end update, noting that the memorial would be finished in 2026. People interested in submitting a design can attend municipal information sessions on March 24 and March 27, 2026.
The new memorial follows other recent additions to the community, such as a veterans crosswalk installed in 2025 at Yonge Street and Murray Drive. The project is part of a multi-year effort by the local council to address gaps in how the town acknowledges military history and reconciliation.
