The City of Grande Prairie, Alberta, finished its latest round of residential snow clearing on March 21, 2026, marking the end of a busy winter season for local streets. This was the fourth major cleanup since the winter began, following a heavy season of snowfall that required multiple passes through every neighbourhood.
This specific cleanup began on March 6, 2026, with Week A neighbourhoods before moving to Week B on March 13, 2026. Contracted crews worked from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. to clear roads in areas like Pinnacle Ridge and Westpointe, which were the final spots reached during the two-week cycle.
The city triggers these residential cleanups whenever 10 centimetres of snow builds up on the ground. This winter saw a significant amount of snow, including a record-setting December 2025 where 83 centimetres fell, which was the most the city has seen in over a decade.
During the clearing, the city used temporary parking bans to ensure crews could reach the entire road. Residents are also reminded by Grande Prairie Enforcement Services that they are required to clear their own sidewalks within 24 hours of a snowfall under Traffic Bylaw C-1166.
Wade Nellis, the Director of Engineering and Transportation, noted that the city appreciates the support from the community during these clearing periods. While residential work is done by private contractors, city staff continue to manage priority roads and ice control as needed.
