The Red Deer U15 A girls hockey team is in Calgary, Alberta, this week to compete in the provincial championships held from March 26 to March 29, 2026. This team is one of eight groups from across the province, including a rival from Rimbey, battling for the top spot at the Great Plains Recreation Facility.
The tournament officially began with an opening ceremony on March 26, 2026, at the 80,000 square foot facility which features two ice rinks and space for 600 fans. According to Hockey Alberta, this event is part of a larger series of 35 championship events taking place in 31 different communities this spring.
Organizers note that girls hockey is growing quickly, with overall participation in the province increasing by 32 per cent since 2016, and specifically by more than 36 per cent at the U15 level. There are now 10,331 registered female athletes under the age of 18 in the province, which makes Alberta the second-highest for female hockey participation in Canada.
Steve Parsons, the chair of the tournament organizing committee, says the event showcases the best skills and sportsmanship from young female athletes. The final game to decide which team will be the provincial champion will take place on March 29, 2026.
