Farmers and agricultural producers in the Dawson Creek area are set to benefit from a record-breaking round of funding aimed at supporting the local food industry. On March 26, 2026, the BC Hydro Peace Agricultural Compensation Fund announced it has approved 20 projects totaling $531,315, marking its largest single round of investment since the program began in 2019.
The fund was established by BC Hydro to support sustainable agriculture in the Peace Region as part of the compensation plan for the Site C project. Since its launch, nearly $5.5 million has been invested in 153 local agriculture-related projects.
Among the local recipients in this record intake are several Dawson Creek-area businesses. Franklin & Co. Flower Farm received $46,940 to install hoophouses, a heated greenhouse, and upgraded irrigation systems to help extend the growing season. Additionally, Whiskey Creek Ranch Ltd. was awarded $20,190 to purchase a commercial-grade egg washer, which is expected to reduce their cleaning time by approximately 93 percent. The Peace Country Stock Dog Association also received $5,000 to host training clinics for livestock handlers.
Ag Fund board chair Rick Kantz noted that the high volume of interest reflects the ongoing strength of the region’s agricultural sector. He stated that these investments help build resilience and improve productivity for producers navigating the unique climate and economic challenges of the area.
The Northern Development Initiative Trust manages the fund, which remains available for future applicants. The next window for producers to submit project proposals will open on July 2, 2026, and close on August 28, 2026.
