Residents in Port Colborne, Ontario, are being advised to prepare for heavy rainfall this weekend as a weather system moves through the region. According to Environment Canada, a Colorado low is expected to bring between 25 and 50 mm of rain starting Saturday and continuing through Saturday night.
The heaviest rainfall is expected during the evening and overnight hours on Saturday. Environment Canada also notes that locally higher amounts are possible if thunderstorms develop, and there is a chance that formal rainfall warnings could be issued as the event nears.
The Niagara Peninsula Conservation Authority has already issued a flood outlook statement. Because the area has received significant rain over the past few days, the ground is currently saturated, which increases the risk of localized flooding. Forecasters expect an additional 20 to 30 mm of rain this weekend, which could bring the total rainfall over a five-day period to between 35 and 80 mm.
To prepare, the Niagara Peninsula Conservation Authority is encouraging property owners to clear any debris from roadside ditches, catch basins, and culverts on or near their land to help manage water flow. Residents are also advised to stay away from creeks, rivers, and other waterbodies while the ground remains saturated and water levels are high.
Port Colborne has a history of flooding along the Lake Erie shoreline, with previous severe weather events in 2019 and 2022 causing widespread power outages and property damage. Local officials and residents are encouraged to monitor weather alerts closely throughout the weekend.
