Residents in St. Theresa Point are preparing for a brief, frigid stretch of weather as Environment Canada forecasts dangerous wind chills that could lead to a risk of frostbite heading into Monday morning.
While temperatures are currently moderate, the wind chill is expected to drop to -27 C overnight on Sunday, April 5, and reach -28 C early Monday morning. According to Health Canada, the risk of frostbite increases significantly when wind chill values fall below -27 C. In these conditions, exposed skin can freeze in as little as 10 to 30 minutes.
Although the forecast indicates a sharp drop in temperature, no formal weather alerts were in effect for the St. Theresa Point First Nation community as of Sunday afternoon. Residents are encouraged to limit time spent outdoors, ensure all skin is covered if they must go out, and check that home heating systems are functioning properly to manage the cold.
The frigid conditions are expected to be short-lived, with a noticeable warming trend arriving later in the week. Temperatures are forecast to climb from a high of -5 C on Monday to 3 C by Friday, eventually reaching a high of 7 C by Saturday, April 11.
