Residents of Selkirk, Manitoba, should prepare for a sharp drop in temperatures as a cold snap moves through the region starting Sunday night, April 5, and continuing into Monday morning, April 6, 2026.
According to Environment Canada, overnight temperatures are expected to reach a low of -12°C. While the actual thermometer reading is cold, strong winds will create a dangerous wind chill factor of -20 overnight. These conditions are expected to persist into Monday, with a daytime high of only -6°C and a morning wind chill of -18.
Although the region is experiencing this significant cold, the official weather alerts page for the area currently shows no alerts in effect. Regardless of the official status, the Province of Manitoba encourages citizens to check on elderly or vulnerable neighbours to ensure they have adequate access to food, heat, and warm clothing during the cold period.
Pet owners are also urged to take precautions as these temperatures can be harmful to animals. The Winnipeg Humane Society advises that pets should be limited to very brief trips outdoors, as they are susceptible to frostbite on their ears, tails, and feet, and can quickly suffer from hypothermia in extreme wind chill conditions.
