The La Broquerie Habs claimed their first league title in franchise history on April 3, 2026, defeating the Selkirk Fishermen 4 games to 1 to win the Capital Region Junior Hockey League championship. The series concluded in Selkirk with a 3-0 shutout victory for the visitors.
The decisive Game 5 saw goals from Colton Pakoo, Mark Plett, and Luka Tetreault, while the team was led by captain Félix Asselin. The Habs, who debuted as an expansion franchise in the 2024-25 season, completed a rapid turnaround under head coach Dan Taillefer and his coaching staff of cousins Réjean Carrière and Jean Moquin. The team, based in the predominantly French-speaking community of La Broquerie, plays its home games at the HyLife Centre.
For the Selkirk Fishermen, the defeat marks the end of a notable playoff run for the longest-running junior hockey team in Canada. Founded in 1917, the Fishermen have a deep history in the sport, including winning the Abbott Cup in 1920 and earning 11 Baldy Northcott Trophy championships as Manitoba Junior B champions since 1978. Since the league was formed in 2018, the Fishermen had previously secured championships in 2019, 2022, and 2023.
Ken Tallaire, the president and owner of the Habs, noted that the program almost folded before local players stepped in to save the team. He emphasized the community significance of the win, noting that the victory is particularly meaningful for the town.
The Habs entered the playoffs after a strong regular season, finishing in second place with a 16-11-0-1-2 record. Goaltender Jaxon Loewen, who was named the league’s top goaltender for the 2025-26 season with a .922 save percentage, anchored the team throughout their championship run.
