Environment Canada has issued a special weather statement for Banff and surrounding areas, warning drivers to prepare for difficult travel conditions due to heavy flurries this morning, April 7, 2026.
The weather alert covers Banff National Park, as well as the stretches of the Icefields Parkway from Lake Louise to Saskatchewan River Crossing and from Jasper to Saskatchewan River Crossing. Meteorologists note that bands of flurries are moving through the region, which may cause visibility to drop suddenly and snow to pile up on roads quickly.
While the Town of Banff is expected to see 2 to 4 centimetres of snow, higher terrain and parts of the Icefields Parkway could receive up to 5 centimetres. The Alberta government advises that motorists should avoid travel during these conditions unless necessary. For those who must be on the road, officials recommend increasing following distances and ensuring vehicles are equipped with emergency kits containing items like warm clothing, blankets, food, and water.
Drivers are reminded that winter conditions can create hazardous driving or potential road closures at any time during the spring. Travelers can check current conditions by visiting 511 Alberta before heading out.
The flurries are expected to taper off by Tuesday afternoon. A gradual warming trend is forecast for the rest of the week, with temperatures reaching a high of 15°C by Friday, according to Environment Canada.
