Organizers in Grande Prairie are working to establish a new senior men’s baseball team called the Grande Prairie Thundercats, with the group officially submitting a bid to join the Sunburst League as of April 5, 2026.
The Sunburst League, which was founded in 1962, serves as the premier senior baseball circuit in Alberta and is overseen by Baseball Alberta. The league currently includes seven teams based in major urban centres across the province, such as Edmonton, Calgary, Red Deer, Sherwood Park, and St. Albert.
If the application is approved, the Thundercats intend to play their home games at the J.D.A. County Sportsplex in Clairmont. The regional facility, operated by the County of Grande Prairie, already features a senior baseball diamond and an indoor batting cage. The local government has previously provided financial support for senior baseball at this location, including funding for the County Brewers, who compete in the Wheatbelt Baseball League.
Team organizers are currently moving forward with preparations, including the design of team jerseys. They are planning to host tryouts and exhibition games later this spring to build a full roster, at which point the final league application will be submitted. Supporters of the initiative suggest that joining this high-level league could provide local athletes with new opportunities to compete, with some noting that players could potentially advance to play in minor league baseball in the United States.
