The City of Grande Prairie has extended its snow clearing and ice control operations through April 10, 2026, as municipal crews shift their focus to managing spring runoff and road repairs.
While the city concluded its formal residential snow clearing rotation on March 30, 2026, officials are keeping crews active to handle snowmelt, clear drainage areas, and fill potholes. This work is part of the city’s broader ice control efforts, which typically run from October 15 to April 15.
The 2025-2026 winter season proved difficult due to higher than normal snowfall. Chief Operating Services Officer Brian Glavin noted that successive storms forced crews to work continuously on both priority and residential roads throughout the winter. To manage the high volume of snow, the city hired additional contractors, which contributed to higher operational costs.
According to the Grande Prairie City Council, the snow removal budget is projected to exceed its allocation by approximately $1.55 million. Part of this overage includes a $200,000 cost associated with a pilot program for clearing snow piles in cul-de-sacs, an area that does not have a defined service level in the city’s official policy.
Residents are reminded that parking bans remain in effect on priority roads from Monday to Friday, between 7 a.m. and 9 p.m. Drivers are encouraged to follow all posted signage while crews continue their work throughout the city.
