The City of Sault Ste. Marie is inviting residents to nominate local individuals, businesses, and organizations for four annual awards that recognize contributions to the community. Nominations are currently being accepted until 4:30 p.m. on April 30, 2026, with the winners set to be honoured at a reception this fall.
The program highlights accomplishments across several sectors through four distinct categories. The Community Development Award is presented by the Community Development Award Committee to businesses or organizations for innovative projects, while the Community Recognition Award, reviewed by the Cultural Vitality Committee, honours local contributions to culture.
Residents can also nominate candidates for the Municipal Heritage Award, which recognizes efforts to preserve and restore the city’s heritage resources. With 38 designated heritage properties currently in Sault Ste. Marie, the Sault Ste. Marie Municipal Heritage Committee oversees the review of these nominations. Additionally, the Parks and Recreation Advisory Committee reviews submissions for the Sports Hall of Fame, which celebrates athletes, coaches, teams, and builders who have brought recognition to the city through sport. Inductees are honoured at the Northern Community Centre, where their achievements are displayed.
Past recipients of these honours include the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 25 and SalDan Construction Group for community recognition, Dean Sayers for heritage preservation, and Special Olympics athlete Carter Simpson for sports achievement. Detailed criteria and nomination forms are available through the City of Sault Ste. Marie website.
