Boaters and residents in Port Colborne can expect mild conditions on Lake Erie throughout most of this weekend, though conditions are forecast to turn choppy by Sunday evening. According to Environment Canada, light winds and calm water will prevail until Sunday, when strengthening winds from the southwest may create hazardous conditions for those on the water.
Through Saturday night, winds are expected to remain light, ranging up to 10 knots, with waves staying at or below 0.5 metres. The forecast shifts on Sunday morning to 10-knot winds from the southeast, followed by a significant increase to southwest winds of 20 knots by Sunday evening. As these winds pick up, wave heights are expected to build to between 0.5 and 1 metre.
While these forecasted winds are strong enough that they would typically trigger a weather alert, the federal agency’s strong wind warning program has officially ended for the season. Because the program—which generally runs from May 1 to November 30—is no longer active, boaters will not receive formal warnings despite the potential for choppy water. This is particularly relevant for the local community, as the city operates the Sugarloaf Marina, a hub for 700 boat slips that serves as a primary access point for the lake and the Welland Canal.
The transition toward the boating season follows recent maintenance in the area, as the removal of the Lake Erie-Niagara River ice boom began on April 6, 2026. While ice coverage across the lake has dropped to less than 1 percent, thick ice still remains near Buffalo. Those planning to head out on the water are encouraged to exercise caution, as Lake Erie’s shallow depth can cause waves to become steep and dangerous very quickly when strong winds develop.
