Residents in Peguis, Manitoba, can expect a mix of sun and clouds this Saturday, April 11, 2026, as the community prepares for the potential of significant spring flooding later this month.
According to Environment Canada, there are currently no active weather alerts for the Peguis or Fisher River areas. Saturday is forecast to reach a high of 9°C in the afternoon following a cool start to the day. Sunday, April 12, is expected to bring light rain, with temperatures ranging from 2°C in the morning to 5°C in the afternoon.
While the weekend weather remains relatively mild, Peguis First Nation is in the midst of urgent flood preparations. Peak water runoff is expected to reach the area around April 19, 2026. The community faces a significant threat, with risk levels potentially reaching those seen during the 2014 or 2022 flood events. The 2022 flood was considered catastrophic, resulting in the displacement of over 1,000 people.
To assist with immediate safety measures, the Manitoba government has advanced $1 million to the community. Officials estimate that between 1 million and 2 million sandbags are required to protect the area. Federal authorities have also approved the deployment of humanitarian personnel, including volunteers from Team Rubicon Canada, to help with the extensive sandbagging operations currently underway.
