Environment Canada has issued a squall warning for eastern Lake Erie near Port Colborne, Ontario, as a line of heavy thunderstorms moves through the area this Wednesday, April 15, 2026. Mariners are being advised to take immediate precautions due to the risk of sudden, severe weather conditions.
The warning, which was put in place at 4:46 a.m. today, reports wind gusts reaching up to 45 knots. The storm is also expected to bring frequent lightning and hail measuring between 1 and 2 centimetres. Visibility in the area may drop to near zero as the storms pass through.
According to Environment Canada, a squall warning is triggered when sudden, powerful wind gusts of 34 knots or greater occur alongside organized thunderstorms. Because Lake Erie is the shallowest of the Great Lakes, weather conditions can shift from calm to dangerous very quickly. While most of the lake is experiencing open water, there remains thick ice along sections of the shore near Buffalo, New York.
Boaters currently on the water are urged to seek safe harbour immediately. Anyone planning to head out should check the latest forecasts through the Canadian Coast Guard radio or local weather stations. Residents and those near the water are reminded to take cover if threatening weather approaches.
In Port Colborne, local vessels often utilize the Sugarloaf Harbour Marina, which serves as a primary safe haven for boats in the region. The Port Colborne Marine Auxiliary Rescue, an all-volunteer search and rescue unit, remains prepared to assist in the area, covering the lake from the mouth of the Niagara River to the Grand River.
