Nolan Dyck, the member of the legislative assembly for Grande Prairie, visited the local Gurdwara Sahib around April 12, 2026, to share condolences with the community following the death of Birinder Singh. Singh, a 22-year-old international student, was killed on March 14, 2026, after being shot while travelling on a highway near Leduc.
The incident has drawn national attention, with the World Sikh Organization of Canada calling for a thorough investigation to determine if the victim was targeted because of his identity. While the organization pointed to a rise in anti-Sikh sentiment across the country as a reason for concern, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police stated that the shooting was not racially motivated and described the event as a random incident. Two suspects, including an 18-year-old from Lloydminster, have been arrested and charged with second-degree murder.
During the visit, Dyck, who serves as the Parliamentary Secretary for Indigenous and Rural Policing, discussed the provincial government’s recent public safety efforts. This includes the passage of new legislation designed to create the Alberta Sheriffs Police Service. This provincial initiative aims to increase the number of officers on duty and provide greater support for local policing throughout rural communities.
