Environment Canada has issued a Special Weather Statement for Sault Ste. Marie and St. Joseph Island, warning residents to prepare for 15 to 25 mm of rainfall beginning Monday evening, April 27, 2026. The rain is expected to continue through Tuesday morning or afternoon, bringing a risk of thunderstorms and increasing concerns about localized flooding.
According to Environment Canada, the ground in the area remains frozen or nearly saturated from recent weather. Because the ground cannot absorb this incoming moisture effectively, there is an elevated risk of water pooling on roads and potential washouts near rivers, creeks, and culverts. Winds are also expected to pick up this evening, reaching 40 km/h with gusts up to 60 km/h.
The Sault Ste. Marie Region Conservation Authority has a Flood Outlook Statement in effect until April 30, 2026. This is due to above-normal snowpack and streamflows that remain high following recent spring flooding across the region. Additionally, the Ministry of Natural Resources has a flood warning in place for the Goulais River that will continue until at least April 30.
Residents are advised to monitor local conditions closely, as rainfall amounts may vary and could be higher closer to Lake Superior. Officials noted that additional rainfall warnings may be issued as the weather system develops.
