Graduating students in Tecumseh who are preparing for careers in technology or utility trades have until May 29, 2026, to apply for one of five $1,000 bursaries offered by the Essex Powerlines Powering Future Leaders program.
The annual awards are designed to support local students entering post-secondary programs in science, technology, engineering, mathematics, or utility-specific fields like powerline technician training. This year, four bursaries are available to graduating Grade 12 students who reside within the utility company’s service area. A fifth bursary is specifically reserved for an eligible student from Caldwell First Nation.
To qualify for the general bursaries, students must provide proof of enrolment in an eligible program, a letter of acceptance, and a letter of recommendation. Applicants or their families must also have an active hydro account with the utility. Submissions and all required documentation must be sent to [email protected] by the May 29 deadline.
The Essex Power Corporation, which is owned by the towns of Tecumseh, Amherstburg, LaSalle, and Leamington, launched the program as part of an effort to foster the next generation of skilled professionals in the region. John Avdoulos, the president and chief executive officer of the corporation, stated that the company views these educational investments as a way to support the future of the local community.
The program has evolved over the last several years, expanding its reach to include the dedicated award for students from Caldwell First Nation in 2025. Students interested in applying can find further information on the official program website.
