The Ganges Sewer Local Service Commission is inviting residents of Salt Spring Island to participate in its upcoming Annual General Meeting and is actively seeking new committee members to help guide local wastewater services. A public notice issued on April 23, 2026, encourages residents and business owners within the service area to get involved in the management of local infrastructure.
The commission provides essential community input for the delivery of sewage collection and wastewater treatment in the Ganges area, a service operated by the Capital Regional District Integrated Water Services Department. Current appointed members of the board include Mike de Carle, David Toynbee, and Colin Whyte, who serve alongside the Electoral Area Director, Gary Holman.
The committee consists of five appointed members and the Electoral Area Director. The rules state that four of these members must be residents or business owners within the service area, while one position is open to individuals from the broader electoral area. Additionally, one seat is reserved for an employee or member of a school district, hospital, or community care facility that owns or manages property within the area served by the sewer system.
Operations for the Ganges facility include the use of membrane bioreactor technology, a system in place since 1996 that provides tertiary treatment. Infrastructure at the site underwent a $3.9-million upgrade in 2019 to replace aging and corroded components. Treated water is currently released through an outfall pipe extending 4.8 kilometres into the Swanson Channel, with monitoring showing that fecal coliform levels remain well within safe limits.
