The Prince County Hospital Foundation in Summerside, Prince Edward Island, has officially begun its search for a qualified daycare operator to run a new childcare facility. The centre will be located on the first floor of the organization’s new Innovation and Learning Centre, which is currently under construction next to the hospital.
The foundation is seeking an operator to provide high-quality, flexible childcare, including extended hours that accommodate the specific scheduling needs of healthcare workers. This new service is intended to act as a key recruitment and retention tool, helping the hospital address local staffing shortages that have previously been complicated by a lack of convenient childcare options for employees.
The proposed daycare space will occupy approximately 8,300 square feet, plus an additional 2,000 square feet for a reception area and common space. The facility will also feature a direct connection to the hospital via a pedway, providing easy access for staff members and their families.
The Innovation and Learning Centre is a $38.5 million project supported by $7 million in federal funding and $10 million from the provincial government. The four-floor, 48,300 square foot building is slated to open on May 1, 2028.
Proposals from interested childcare providers are due by 4:00 p.m. on May 11, 2026. A dedicated committee will review the submissions, with a provider selection expected by May 15, 2026. The foundation expects to have the lease agreement and memorandum of understanding finalized by July 31, 2026.
