The City of Grande Prairie is launching its annual mosquito control program on May 2, 2026, aiming to manage insect populations as residents head into the warmer months.
Crews will focus on treating standing water for mosquito larvae, with operations expected to continue through September, depending on local weather conditions. As part of these efforts, the City performs a primary aerial application via helicopter within a designated boundary in late April or early May.
To reduce mosquito numbers, the City uses a granular product called Aquabac 200G. According to Health Canada, the product contains a naturally occurring soil bacterium that targets mosquito larvae when ingested. This treatment is considered harmless to humans, pets, livestock, and beneficial insects.
These efforts are part of a broader pest management strategy that runs from May through October 2026. This wider program also includes addressing noxious weeds, insects, and plant diseases on City-owned land using a variety of chemical, mechanical, and manual methods registered with Health Canada’s Pest Management Regulatory Agency.
