The City of Summerside is marking national Emergency Preparedness Week, which runs from May 3 to May 9, 2026, by offering residents local opportunities to learn how to better handle unexpected disasters. As part of a partnership with the PEI Emergency Measures Organization, the city is hosting events to help families understand their specific risks and prepare for potential disruptions.
A free public presentation will take place on Friday, May 8 at 11:00 AM at the Summerside Rotary Library, located at 57 Central Street. This session offers practical advice for residents on how to stay safe during events like severe weather, forest fires, or other local hazards.
Prince Edward Island residents face a variety of seasonal threats, including hurricanes, blizzards, ice storms, and coastal flooding. Tanya Mullally, the Provincial Emergency Management Coordinator, notes that it is important for everyone to learn these specific risks, create a personal safety plan, and maintain an emergency kit at home.
Officials emphasize that residents should be prepared to be self-sufficient for at least 72 hours during an emergency. This is because it may take time for emergency crews to reach those in need when a major event impacts the community.
In addition to public education, the provincial government has invested $1.4 million in emergency measures, such as providing shelter kits and generators to communities across the province. These efforts are part of a broader strategy overseen by the provincial government.
