Bay Roberts Fire Rescue is urging residents to remain vigilant as the forest fire season officially began across the island of Newfoundland on May 1, 2026. The season, which runs until September 30, comes following a difficult 2025 where wildfires across the province destroyed hundreds of homes and structures, including significant damage in the Conception Bay North area.
While provincial rules require permits for burning vegetation, wood, or paper during this period, Bay Roberts Fire Rescue notes that campfires within the town do not require a permit. Residents planning any outdoor fires are encouraged to monitor the daily Forest Fire Hazard Map to understand the local risk level. To help keep the community informed, the town installed a fire index sign on L.T. Stick Drive late last summer.
Bay Roberts Fire Chief Michael Murphy, who assisted in firefighting efforts on the north shore during last year’s fires, is emphasizing the need for caution this year. Chief Murphy has already responded to an out-of-control brush fire in Port de Grave earlier this spring. The department is also encouraging residents to follow FireSmart Canada practices to reduce potential wildfire risks around their properties.
At the provincial level, the government has increased support for wildfire preparedness. Budget 2026 includes over $7 million for emergency preparedness and $2.2 million dedicated specifically to wildfire prevention and mitigation. Furthermore, approximately $2.26 million has been allocated to help 58 communities develop local wildfire resiliency plans. The province has also bolstered its aerial firefighting capacity by returning a fifth water bomber to its fleet for the 2026 season.
The Department of Forestry, Agriculture and Lands continues to coordinate these prevention efforts as residents are reminded that their cooperation is essential in preventing a repeat of the losses experienced last year.
