Construction is officially underway for a new fire station in Summerside, Prince Edward Island, marking the start of a long-awaited project to replace the city’s aging emergency response facility. After over a decade of planning, ground has been broken on a site at the corner of MacEwen Road and Cairn’s Boulevard, which will serve as the new home for the Summerside Fire Department.
The new building will replace the current station on Fitzroy Street, which has been in use since 1962. The City of Summerside awarded the construction contract to Summerside-based Fitzgerald and Snow Ltd. for $11.5 million after they submitted the lowest bid among seven companies. Funding for the project is split over two fiscal years, with $5.5 million allocated in the current 2026-27 city budget.
The upgraded facility is designed to improve daily operations, featuring four fire truck bays, which is double the capacity of the current secondary station in St. Eleanor‘s. It will also include a specialized decontamination bay for equipment, improved shower facilities, a fitness area, overnight accommodations, and expanded space for on-site training. The construction project is expected to take approximately 18 months, with the building projected to be operational by late 2027.
City leadership, including Mayor Dan Kutcher and Fire Chief Ron Enman, have been instrumental in advancing the project. For City Councillor and volunteer firefighter Justin Doiron, the start of construction is a milestone after years of anticipation and discussions about the need for an updated facility. Once completed, the new station is expected to provide essential support for the community’s emergency services for years to come.
