Sault Area Hospital is marking Mental Health Week in Sault Ste. Marie this year with a series of community events and a new art installation designed to encourage local conversation and connection. Running from May 4 to May 10, 2026, the week-long observance aligns with the national theme, Come Together, Canada, which highlights the importance of social connection as a way to improve mental well-being.
To help residents connect with local resources, the hospital is hosting information tables in its lobby on May 4 and May 5 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Staff from the hospital’s mental health and addictions department are joining representatives from the Canadian Mental Health Association Algoma and hospital patient advisors to provide information and support to those visiting the facility.
As part of the week, the hospital is also unveiling a new interactive mural titled Cocoon to Community. Located on Level 1 in the C-wing, the mural was inspired by the hospital’s Mental Health and Addictions Patient and Family Advisors Committee. The installation, which was funded by the Sault Area Hospital Foundation, is intended to serve as a symbol of growth and healing, focusing on themes of courage, resilience, authenticity, and acceptance.
For healthcare professionals and community partners, a Trauma and Addictions Symposium will take place on May 7. The event, which is being held in partnership with organizations including the Sault Community Health Centre, the Algoma Ontario Health Team, and Algoma Family Services, will feature sessions on trauma-informed care and trends in addictions medicine. Clinical specialist Diana Tikasz is set to lead discussions on implementing trauma-informed care and managing high-stress, trauma-exposed work environments.
The Canadian Mental Health Association notes that social isolation is a growing public health issue, with national data indicating that 13 per cent of Canadians report feeling lonely often or always. Residents seeking immediate help can access resources such as the 988 suicide crisis helpline, which is available 24/7.
