Tecumseh residents will see a change to their trash pickup services starting February 1, 2027, as the Town of Tecumseh moves to an alternating bi-weekly garbage collection schedule.
Town council voted unanimously to award a new contract to GFL Environmental Inc. to manage waste services. This shift to collecting household garbage every other Thursday is intended to help the municipality manage rising costs. According to the town, maintaining the previous weekly collection schedule would have resulted in a 263 percent budget increase, while the new bi-weekly model limits the increase to 18 percent over the current $760,000 budget. This adjustment will result in a 0.44 percent tax rate increase for residents.
While the regular garbage pickup schedule is changing, other services will continue as usual. Yard waste will still be collected every Monday, and bulky items will continue to be picked up on a monthly basis, tied to the last garbage day of each month. Residents should also note that the collection of white goods will continue to be handled by the Essex-Windsor Solid Waste Authority.
The town received two bids for the contract, selecting the proposal from GFL Environmental Inc. over one submitted by Miller Waste Systems Inc. Residents are encouraged to check the town website for updates on how these changes will apply to their specific area as the 2027 start date approaches.
