The Summerside Western Capitals have officially punched their ticket to the playoff rounds of the 2026 Centennial Cup. The local team secured their spot following a 5-3 victory against the Thunder Bay North Stars on May 12, 2026, at the Island Petroleum Energy Centre in Summerside, Prince Edward Island.
The win brought the team to a 2-1-1 record in the round-robin portion of the national tournament, placing them third in their group with seven points. Under the guidance of head coach Billy McGuigan, the team showed early dominance, taking a 3-0 lead in the first period and extending it to 4-0 before the North Stars mounted a late comeback attempt. Forward Eliott Robert led the offensive effort with two goals, including an empty-netter with nine seconds left on the clock, while Lane Sim, Elliott Mullen, and Alex Guy also contributed to the score sheet. Goaltender Kolton Bourret made 13 saves as the Capitals outshot their opponents 35-16.
The tournament, which features 10 teams competing for the national title, continues in Summerside until May 17, 2026. Having reached the playoffs, the Capitals are set to play their quarter-final match on May 15, with game times slated for either 4 p.m. or 7:30 p.m. The winners of those matches will move on to the semifinals on May 16.
This tournament run follows a strong season for the club, which includes a 2025-26 performance that saw team member Simon Mullen named the top defenceman by the Canadian Junior Hockey League. As they head into the next stage of the tournament, the Capitals look to build on their history as perennial contenders at home, having previously won the national title as hosts in 1997 and reached the championship final in 1989 and 2013.
