The City of Yorkton has launched its summer construction season, with crews beginning work on a series of road and sidewalk repairs across the community. Following a decision by city council on April 20, 2026, more than $2 million has been committed to address aging infrastructure throughout the city.
The 2026 paving program, contracted to Fedorowich Construction Ltd., will focus on 16 street segments identified as being in very poor condition. This work, which covers roughly 24,270 square metres, represents a 19 per cent increase in scope compared to the previous year. Meanwhile, North Star Concrete Inc. is handling the concrete replacement program, which prioritizes repairing sidewalk uplifts and addressing trip hazards.
Residents should expect various disruptions as the projects progress through August. These include temporary road closures, lane restrictions, detours, sidewalk closures, and changes to pedestrian routes. In addition to potential traffic delays, those living or travelling near work zones may experience construction noise, dust, and temporary parking restrictions.
These upgrades follow a 2024 city-wide assessment that rated the road network as fair and the sidewalk network as poor. To address the infrastructure gap, the city increased its public works budget for 2026, including a 13 per cent boost for road maintenance and a 48 per cent increase for sidewalks and curbs. This spending is supported by the 2026 budget, which included a 3.85 per cent tax increase for residents.
