The Municipality of Mississippi Mills Council has officially passed by-law 26-027 to grant heritage status to 103 Queen Street in Almonte, ensuring the long-term preservation of the historic property known as The Doctor’s House.
The home, built between 1868 and 1869 by Almonte’s first physician, Dr. William Mostyn, was selected for protection because it meets seven of the nine provincial criteria for heritage value, including its distinct design and historical significance to the community. The current owners, Heather and Jean-Philippe Landry, were consulted during the process and have no objections to the designation.
This action was taken in response to updates to the Ontario Heritage Act, which set a 2026 deadline for municipalities to formally protect properties currently on their heritage registers. Under this new status, the owners are now required to obtain a Heritage Permit from the municipality before making any alterations, new construction, or demolition work to the building’s protected features.
The public has until June 6, 2026, to file an appeal regarding the by-law. If no appeals are received by that date, the designation will be finalized and officially registered on the property title.
