The Red Deer Polytechnic Board of Governors has finalized a new three-year funding agreement with the provincial government, establishing the institution’s operating framework through 2028. The agreement, which was unanimously approved by the board on January 14, 2026, aligns the school with the provincial Alberta 2030: Building Skills for Jobs strategy.
While the agreement outlines the framework for the institution’s base operating grant, the school is currently navigating significant financial pressures. To manage these challenges, the polytechnic recently announced that 47 positions will be abolished by the end of May 2026. This transition is part of a broader effort to reach a balanced budget by the 2027-28 school year.
The provincial budget for the 2026-27 year provides the polytechnic with a 2.7 percent increase to its operating grant, amounting to approximately $1.089 million. This marks the first funding increase after three years of flat financial support. Despite this, the school faces ongoing fiscal strain, partly driven by a decline in international credit student enrollment, which fell to 906 students in the 2025-26 winter term from 1,215 in the previous year.
Under the provincial Post-Secondary Learning Act, the Board of Governors is legally required to sign the funding agreement with the Alberta Ministry of Advanced Education. While the Board holds this legal responsibility, operational accountability for the agreement’s implementation rests with the institution’s President.
The updated agreement, along with a newly approved mandate, is intended to guide the polytechnic as it works to ensure long-term sustainability while maintaining its role in local apprenticeship and career-oriented training.
