A 16-year-old is facing multiple criminal charges after a bear spray assault at a gathering in Sault Ste. Marie during the early hours of May 17, 2026.
According to the Sault Ste. Marie Police Service, officers responded to a report of an assault in the 0-100 block of Chestnut Street South at approximately 12:30 a.m. Investigators determined that the youth had attended an uninvited gathering at the home. When an adult resident asked the individual to leave the property, the youth sprayed the resident with bear spray.
The victim sustained minor physical injuries during the confrontation and was transported to Sault Area Hospital for treatment. While the accused was familiar to some people in attendance, police noted that the victim and the accused did not know each other.
Officers located and arrested the teenager at approximately 1:15 a.m. The accused, whose identity is protected by the federal Youth Criminal Justice Act, remains in custody awaiting a bail hearing. The individual faces charges including assault with a weapon, administering a noxious thing with intent to endanger life, possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, and two counts of failing to comply with an undertaking.
Legal experts note that while bear spray is a tool designed specifically for wildlife deterrence in Canada, using the product against a person is a criminal offence. Unauthorized use can lead to serious charges under the Criminal Code, including assault with a weapon and possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose.
