The City of Grande Prairie officially adopted its updated Municipal Development Plan on January 15, 2024, finalizing a long-term strategy that guides how the community will grow over the next two decades.
The new Municipal Development Plan, formally known as Bylaw C-1462, outlines the vision for local land use, housing, and infrastructure. The review process involved a four-phase approach, including public information sessions held in May 2023 and a survey that collected community feedback on local development needs.
During these public discussions, residents shared specific concerns regarding how new construction might affect older neighbourhoods. Many community members pointed to issues like parking and the need to protect existing residential areas from incompatible developments, citing the College Park area as a location where student and staff parking has caused local frustration.
The Intermunicipal Development Plan, a separate agreement between the City and the County of Grande Prairie, was also updated and adopted by both councils in November 2024. Most recently, the County of Grande Prairie separately adopted its own Municipal Development Plan on April 20, 2026, following a public hearing held on March 9, 2026.
