Yorkton residents can now have their say on plans to build two new outdoor basketball court complexes, as the city moves forward with a $910,000 recreation project funded through reallocated reserves. The community engagement phase runs from May 21 to June 4, 2026, on the city’s Shape Your City platform.
The project was originally slated for Columbia Park, but drainage issues made that location unsuitable. Instead, the city will build two dual-court facilities in existing park spaces, with locations chosen based on public input. “After meeting with key stakeholders to gather early input and help shape the vision for the project, we are now moving into the community engagement phase,” states the project page.
One complex would include full amenities like lighting, seating, and shade structures, while the second would have features dependent on budget and community priorities. The $910,000 budget was approved by council as part of the 2026 capital budget, which included a 3.85 per cent tax increase. Recreation and community services represent about 10.57 per cent of total city spending, roughly $4.29 million.
The project is led by Taylor Morrison, Director of Recreation & Community Services, along with Recreation Services Manager Jessica Resler and Parks Manager Matt Charney. It aligns with the Parks and Recreation Master Plan, adopted by council in June 2023, which emphasizes diverse recreation opportunities for youth and families.
Residents can visit the project page to share their thoughts on where the courts should go and what features matter most. Tendering and construction are expected later in 2026, once community feedback is collected and locations are finalized.
