A 24-year-old man faces charges after Brandon police say he threatened a man he knew earlier this month at the Corral Centre parking lot.
According to a Brandon Police Service news release, the incident happened on May 8 when a 50-year-old man was in the parking lot at the Corral Centre, 923 18th Street North. Police say a 24-year-old man known to the victim approached him and made threats. Officers found and arrested the suspect on May 24, charging him with uttering threats. He was released on an appearance notice and is due in court on August 4, 2026.
The arrest was one of several over the weekend detailed by police. On the same day, officers arrested a 22-year-old woman at a home in the 100 block of 2nd Street after learning she had broken release order conditions requiring her to stay away from drugs and alcohol and not contact the homeowner. She was held in custody and appeared in court the morning of May 25.
Also on May 24, a 30-year-old man was arrested at a home in the 700 block of 6th Street. Police say he was breaching court-imposed conditions including a curfew from 10 p.m. to 7 a.m. and restrictions on attending that address or contacting someone there. He too was held for a May 25 court appearance.
In a separate call, police took a 40-year-old woman into protective custody in the 100 block of Victoria Avenue. She was found passed out in a back alley and was highly intoxicated. Under the Protective Detention and Care of Intoxicated Persons Act, she was brought to Brandon Police Service cells to be released when sober.
Police also arrested two people on outstanding warrants during the weekend, though no further details were given.
The uttering threats charge comes as Brandon saw a sharp rise in violent crime in 2024. The violent crime severity index climbed 18 percent to 125.76, compared to a three percent dip across Manitoba. Calls tied to uttering threats jumped 19 percent, from 109 to 130. Police Chief Tyler Bates has called the increase concerning but expressed hope it was a one-time spike.
